The VA DOE mission is "to educate students in the fundamental knowledge and academic subjects that they need to become capable, responsible, and self-reliant citizens. Therefore, the mission of the Virginia Board of Education and the superintendent of public instruction, in cooperation with local school boards, is to increase student learning and academic achievement".
This organization serves as a parent organization for all library programs. Established in 1876, this organization's aim has been "to enable librarians to do their present work more easily and at less expense.". Although the issues have changed throughout its history, their goals have remained focused on allowing librarians to do their jobs with minimal outside interference and providing the best information to its patrons.
The Virginia Educational Media Association (VEMA) mission is "to be the recognized voice for excellence in Virginia's school libraries. Our aim is to promote: literacy, information access and evaluation, love of literature, effective use of technology, collaboration in the teaching/learning process, intellectual freedom, professional growth, instructional leadership, and lifelong learning".
The Modern Language Association of America is "to promote study, criticism, and research in the more and less commonly taught modern languages and their literatures and to further the common interests of teachers of these subjects". This organization serves as a guide for conducting research and provides a standard through which students should cite information and/or resources used in their research projects. Parents and students should note that use of MLA style citations is found within the VA Standards of Learning for English.
The Library of Virginia's mission is to "preserve the legacy of Virginia's culture and history and provide access to the most comprehensive information resources for and about Virginia".
