    Third Grade Curriculum

    Math:  Students will be learning about place value, adding and subtracting with regrouping, graphing, measurement, geometry, multiplication, time, money, fractions, problem solving, and beginning division.  Students will also be participating in STEAM projects and real life problem solving group activities during math or a math lab time. As you can see, students will be very busy learning new concepts and sharpening their skills in math.

    Reading: By the third grade most students have learned how to read and they are now ready to read to learn.  Students will be reading chapter books & articles to develop their comprehension and understanding of what they are reading.  I realize that there will be different levels of reading ability in my classroom and I will differentiate my instruction to fit the needs of my students.  My goal as a teacher is to create life-long readers!  In order to do this, I will use several approaches to get your child to learn to love reading.

    1. Daily Five: Students will be choosing “Good Fit/Just Right” books this year in class and at home.  Skills such as comprehension, predicting, summarizing, main idea, sequencing, etc. will be taught in correlation to the books we read.  The Reading Cafe board in our classroom will serve as a constant reminder for students to self-check while they are reading to make sure they are focused on the reading skills that have been taught.  Most of the books students will be reading will be chosen by the students themselves.  Some articles and short reads will be chosen by the teacher to supplement units of study. Students will learn how to pick a book on their reading level and will be expected to read their Good Fit books at home and during school.

    2. Genre studies:  Students will be introduced to different genres of books during the school year, fiction, nonfiction, picture books, chapter books, graphic novels, poetry, historical fiction, realistic fiction, biographies, autobiographies, etc... Students will practice reading these different genres throughout the year to identify the author’s purpose for writing the selection and to develop their knowledge of different types of literature and writing.

    3. Nightly Reading:  I ask that students read 20 minutes each night.  On most nights it will be their Good Fit book and other nights it could be reading for a science or social studies test.  Students will know what to read each night and it will be on their homework sheet.  Be sure to check your child’s homework sheet each night so that you know what is expected of your child.

    Vocabulary: Students will have a vocabulary folder where they will learn 5 new words a week.  We will focus on prefixes, suffixes, root words, word meaning, syllables, synonyms & antonyms. Students will have a vocabulary test every other week on 10 words from the 2 weeks.

    Spelling:  Students will have spelling words each week that focus on phonics patterns.  The words may look easy at first, but we are focusing on letter combinations, patterns, and sounds that will help them to become
    better readers and writers. Spelling tests will be every Friday.

    Writing: Students will be learning the writing process and what makes a good paragraph. Students will learn to indent and include 5-7 complete sentences to create their paragraph.  Students will also identify their audience & purpose in writing and will go on to write narratives, descriptive paragraphs, poetry, and expository pieces. 

    Science:  Students will be learning about rocks and soil, the water cycle, matter, force and motion, life processes and living systems.  We will complete performance-based assessments as well as STEAM projects and experiments! 

    Social Studies:  Students will be learning Geography/Map skills, Ancient Egypt, China, Greece, Rome, & Mali, as well  as Government and Economics.  Social studies performance-based assessments and different projects will take place throughout the year! 


    Students will be given homework each night.  Every night there will be 20 minutes of independent reading.  Daily math review homework will be given each night as well.  On occasion there will be a social studies or science test to study for.  Students should get in the habit of looking over their spelling & vocabulary words at home also.  Homework for a 3rd grader should not take longer than 30/40 minutes.  If you find that homework is taking longer than that, we will discuss it and make necessary changes.  Homework & homework sheets will be located in their homework folders. Due to our very unique schedule this year, students are required to do their homework each night and be ready to check it on the days they are in school. 


          Other important information

    • Snack: We will have a snack time in the morning around 10:35 each day. Please make sure your child is bringing a healthy snack to school such as: fruit, yogurt, apple sauce, nuts, granola bars, cheese sticks etc.
    • Grading: We use a 10 point grading scale in third grade.

    A  90-100

    B  80-89

    C  70-79

    D  60-69

    F  below 60

    • SOL’s: Third graders will take a math and reading SOL in the spring. 

    As you can see, your child will be learning some very interesting things this year in 3rd grade. We will focus on individual growth and development for each child.  Third graders are AWESOME!!!  We will have a busy, fun, and full year!  I am so excited to be teaching your child and I am looking forward to getting to know all of the unique and special personalities of my class.  I know with your support and involvement it will be a successful year!  Please remember, if you have any additional questions or concerns please let me know!  iseli.lm@augusta.k12.va.us
