    Ms. Helmick                       Ms. Helmick

    Hi! My name is Ms.Helmick.

I am a very proud product of Augusta County Public Schools. I grew up in Verona and went to Verona Elementary, Stewart Middle School and graduated from Fort Defiance High School. I even student taught at Verona Elementary School.

I am a local college graduate as I have degrees from Blue Ridge Community College (A of A&S), Mary Baldwin College (BA), and James Madison University (M.ED). I am certified to teach Early Childhood Special Education and nk-8th grades. Some honors that I have received have been, "Teacher of the Year at Verona Elementary” and “Who’s Who Among America’sTeachers.” Both of these awards mean a lot to me as nomination occurs by your fellow teachers, students. I hold a 5 stars rating  with Virgina Quality! I am very proud of that score!

I began working for Augusta County Public schools in 1992 at Beverly Manor.  During that year (1992), I piloted a collaboration between Augusta County Public Schools  and the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind. For the next four years, I worked, at Cassell Elementary, in the grades,  Preschool through fourth grade working with children that were "at risk" or had special needs.

In 1997, I moved to Albemarle County and taught Early Childhood Special Education for Madison County Public Schools for two years. I returned to Augusta County Public Schools in 1999 as an Itinerant Early Childhood Special Education Teacher. My home school was Stuarts Draft Elementary but I travelled around to all of the elementary schools.  I provided special education services to children with special needs that were enrolled in Preschool. Also,  I  worked with the Valley Community Services Board and served as Augusta County Schools Transition Teacher for the families and  children with special needs turning two, three years of age in to our local Preschools.  In 1999, I began my position at Verona Elementary and  I was so glad to be “home”. When Verona Elementary School closed in May 2017, I was excited to learn that I would be able to stay with the Verona community and would be teaching Preschool at Clymore Elementary School. I was really happy that I would be with so many of the students and families that I had gotten to know from Verona Elementary. Now, I am so glad to be at Clymore,  "One community, one school"!

What do I like to do? I like to spend time with family and friends. I am a dialysis caregiver for my Dad. I share his love of the Baltimore Orioles and treasure our times that we have been able to go to some games at Camden Yards. The picture above is of me driving our antique , 1979 Ford F150 Ranger in a local  parade. It is my Dad's truck but mine as well, he would say! I love this truck as you can see! My Mom and I like to go shoppoing, plant flowers, and watch Hallmark movies.  I am blessed with wonderful parents that have supported me in everything I have done and now I am able to be there for them!

I do not have children of my own but I am an Aunt. I have a  15 year old niece, Maddie Grace. I enjoy my special Aunt/Niece  time with her and watching her grow in to the beautiful young lady she has become! She has made me a stronger teacher and person. We like to take rides on the country roads listening to music, watch movies, swimming, shopping, stopping at Starbuck's and just hanging out!  I love going to watch her play volleyball for her school team and hear about her stories when she is golfing with her school team.

I look forward to working with your child and family! If you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesistate to contact me at shelmick@augusta.k12.va.us or 540-245-5043.
