Sara Urry is the Director of Music at Buffalo Gap High School in Augusta County. She provides primary instruction for all choral, guitar, piano, music theory and band classes, is the Director of the Marching Bison Band, and conducts the Buffalo Gap Symphonic Band and Concert Choir. Ms. Urry is also chair of the Fine Arts Department and serves as the vocal and instrumental director for the Spring Musical. Ms. Urry has significant experience in curriculum development through cross curricular and project based learning units, most recently conducting a school wide unit teaching the historical events of 9/11/01 through the intersection of musical theatre and core classes. Ms. Urry has been a member of Buffalo Gap High School instructional faculty since 2014.
Ms. Urry is a 2010 graduate of Chesapeake College in Wye Mills, Maryland with an Associates of Arts degree in Liberal Arts and Science and a 2013 graduate of Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts in Music and instrumental and vocal K-12 certification. During her time at Chesapeake College, Ms. Urry actively participated in the Chesapeake Youth Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Julien Benichou, the Mid Shore Community Band under the direction of Mr. Matthew Fullerton and studied piano performance with Mr. William Thomas of Chesapeake College and Mrs. Andrea Dorman-Shaw of the Academy Art Museum. She also received resolutions from the Maryland Senate and House of Delegates, as well as a Citation of Honor from Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley for her service to the Maryland 4-H Program. At Bridgewater College, she studied percussion performance with Dr. Michael Overmann and piano performance with Dr. Larry Taylor. Ms. Urry was an active member of the Bridgewater Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Oratorio Choir, Handbell Choir, President of the National Association for Music Education Collegiate Chapter, Director of the Screamin' Eagles Pep Band, and a member of the James Madison University Advanced Steel Drum Band.
Ms. Urry is a founding member of the Valley Wind Ensemble and also a member of the Massanutten Brass Band. She also remains an active member with the Augusta County Band Directors Association, the Augusta County Choral Directors Association, the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association, the Virginia Choral Directors Association and the National Association for Music Education. Her past affiliations have included: the National Association for Music Educators Collegiate, the Philomathese Honor Society, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and Maryland 4-H All-Stars. Ms. Urry has been a recipient of the John Phillip Sousa Band Award, Nelson T. Huffman Award, Outstanding Symphonic Band Member Award, and Outstanding Steel Band Member Award. Sara resides in Penn Laird, VA with her fiancé Casey Booth and their animals German Shepherd Husky, Cayenne, and Quarter Horse Paint, Pete.
