In addition to the strong academic records which established our eligibility for membership, our chapter members are leaders in many student organizations and we served our school and community through many activities, including The Giving Tree and Relay for Life.

The Giving Tree is a program started several years ago at our school. This undertaking arose from SMS students’ desire to help those in need during the holiday season. Clothing, toys, and other items were collected to give to several families in great need. This year, several families from SMS were selected for this project due to family illness, economic need, or other circumstances. The Giving Tree decorated with tags, was set up in the front office for students, parents, teachers and staff to select a tag, purchase the item, and return it unwrapped to the counseling office. In addition to tags, members of the NJHS and the Stewart Stewards Club contacted local businesses for items to be used at the Silent Auction to raise additional money for this project. Students brought in gift certificates, handmade craft items, prints from local artists, jewelry and much more.

At Relay for Life events, communities across the globe come together to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against a disease that has already taken too much. NJHS worked with SCA this year to help make a difference in the fight against cancer by volunteering their time at the last SMS Fun Night. All proceeds from that night were donated to Relay for Life.

As members of NJHS students were required to complete 20 hours working in the community. Students completed over 1,700 hours of community service. Below are a few organizations that benefitted from members volunteer hours:

    • Operation Christmas

    • Delivered Thanksgiving Meals

    • Creative Works Farm

    • SPCA

    • Frontier Culture Museum

    • Verona Food Pantry

    • Loads of Love Charity

    • Salvation Army
