    Congratulations to the SMS FFA Livestock Judging team for competing on August 4th at the State FFA Livestock Judging Contest at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds! Team members were: Sam Martin, Samuel Garber, Travis Ball, Allison Rhodes, Rylee Shiflett, and Ashley Tutwiler. Our team placed 2nd overall!

    A special thank you to the Technology Education department, middle school student Douglas K., and teacher Ben Wyrick for putting together this high quality video from our Tractor/Farm Safety Day as a part of FFA Week back in February! 
    We had a great, successful FFA week this year as we celebrated with FFA dress up spirit days, trivia on the morning announcements each day, and lots of fun after school activities! On Monday, our chapter members went ice skating. On Wednesday, we served the SMS faculty a great breakfast provided by our parents. On Thursday, a few of our members brought tractors and farm implements to school to educate the middle and elementary aged students on farm and tractor safety!

    Our spring FFA contest season and practices have begun! We are currently gearing up for the Envirothon Contest with help from 7th grade science teacher Mr. Heberling. The Envirothon team had a workshop at Bridgewater College earlier this year and are hard at work studying soils, forestry, wildlife, fisheries, and the current ag issue! Team members are Hank Thompson, Emory Seal, Travis Ball, Klay Redifer, Jake Frizzelle, Sam Garber, and any other 6th-8th grader interested in joining! The contest will be April 2nd at Natural Chimney's park.

    We are gearing up for National FFA Week which will be February 24th-28th! Our chapter is in the process of planning our dress up spirit days, activities, and service projects for the week! Mr. Jim Snavely was able to record members that are on our Parliamentary Procedure team to advertise for this year's National FFA Week! Listen to them at the links below! 
    Currently, we have spring teams practicing and competing in upcoming contests! Practices are being held Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays after school from 3-5 pm. We have a Junior Parliamentary Procedure team, a Junior Hippology and Horse Judging Team, a Junior Stockman's and Livestock Judging Team, and a few Creed Speaking and Prepared Public Speaking Contestants! Wish us luck in the coming weeks! 
    In January our chapter attended the Pennsylvania Farm Show!

    We had a great time at the Annual New Hope Christmas Parade this December! Our chapter's float design won us 2nd place in the parade! Thank you to the Shiflett family for their help in decorating and letting us use their wagon and tractor!

    We had such a successful Community Dinner and Auction Fundraiser this year. We appreciate all of our members, parents, community members, and guests for making this event happen! Our chapter raised nearly $4,000 to use for the coming year to help make FFA opportunities happen for our members!

    Our 8th Grade Officer team had a great time at National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana this past October! We attended workshops, sessions, the rodeo, and our chapter was recognized Nationally as a 2 Gold Star Middle School FFA Chapter in the country!

    The 7th Grade Assistant FFA Officers travelled to Virginia Tech in October to participate in the Junior Leadership Workshops. 
    We had a Junior Skill-A-Thon Stockman's Team this year at the State Fair and Ella Shreckhise placed 7th overall in Sheep. 
    We had a Junior Hippology Team this year at the State Fair and Amy Welcher placed 4th overall and our team was 5th overall. 
    We had a Junior Dairyman's Team this year at the State Fair and Lee Kent placed 20th overall out of over 130 people and our team placed 12th overall out of 40 teams! 
    On September 25th, we celebrated World School Milk Day by visiting Clymore Elementary School to speak to the Pre-School and Kindergarten classes about dairy production and where their milk comes from! We had so much fun! 
    Congratulations to all Stewart Middle School FFA Members for a job well done at the Rockingham County Fair Livestock Shows this year! 
    The First Annual FFA Tractor Pull fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday, August 24th at Augusta Expo starting at 4 pm! We need all FFA students, parents, alumni, families, and community members to help with this event! See Mrs. Hoffman or Teresa Craig (organizer of the parent volunteer committe) for more details!! 
    The Augusta County Fair is July 30th - August 3rd at the Augusta Expo Center! SMS FFA will be running the petting zoo and working the ice cream booth from 6-8 pm back by the livestock barns! Any FFA member is able to help and families are invited to come visit us! The petting zoo is free, the ice cream proceeds all go towards our trip to National FFA Convention!

    Back to school night is scheduled for Tuesday, July 30th from 6-7:30 pm. You can sign your child up for FFA on this night! Dues will be $20 and FFA tshirts will be dispursed soon for students who sign up by August 30th!

    We had a very successful week at State FFA Convention in June! Below is a wrap up and pictures from our week! 
    SMS FFA received a Gold Rating for our National Chapter application which highlights the activities that we plan and implement throughout the year and our chapter's efforts will move on to be judged at National FFA Convention in October. 
    Carlie Good and Brenda Lamas placed 1st overall in the Division 2 Agriscience Fair Contest with their project on Broiler Chickens in the Animal Systems category and will move on to compete at National FFA Convention in the fall. 
    Sam Martin placed 2nd in the Junior Livestock Judging Contest with our team placing 6th overall. 
    Daniel Worrell placed 2nd overall in the FFA Quiz Bowl Contest with our team placing 4th overall. 
    Amy Welcher placed 4th in the Junior Horse Hippology Contest with our team placing 5th overall. 
    Bianca Brensinger placed 7th in the Junior Dairy Judging Contest with our team placing 5th overall.

    Fruit Sale Fundraiser: Thank you to all parents, students, and community members who helped participate in either selling or buying fruit this year from our annual citrus and nut sale fundraiser through Florida Farm Bureau!     National FFA Convention wrap up! Our eight 8th grade FFA officers represented SMS AND the state of Virginia at the National FFA Convention and Expo this past October. We designed, created, set up, and worked at the Hall of States Booth competition where we represented Virginia's agriculture and FFA. Our booth and our efforts earned us a silver rating in the Hall of States competition where we were the only middle school represented! We were also just recently mentioned in the News Virginian in an article!     State FFA Convention wrap up! We had a wonderful week and walked away with a lot of awards and recognition!     Brenda Lamas received her own personalized FFA Jacket and was recognized on stage. 
    The Dairy Judging Team placed 3rd overall and Brianna Lane placed 9th as an individual.

    The Hippology Team placed 4th overall. 
    The Quiz Bowl Team placed 5th overall.

    Our Chapter also received the National Chapter Award (silver rating) as well as the Strengthening Agriculture Award for the Blue Ridge Area!

    We had a very successful Blue Ridge Area Rally on April 4th. 13 SMS students attended and participated in mock contests in Small Animal Care, Ag Mechanics, or Livestock Judging. Courtney Begoon competed in the Area Creed Speaking Contest where she placed 5th. Montana Breeden competed in the Area Prepared Public Speaking Contest and placed 3rd!
