    SEMESTER ALGEBRA II / TRIGONOMETRY

    Course Syllabus

    2019-2020

    Teacher: Lisa Lam

    Fort Defiance High School

    School Phone: 245-5050

    E-mail: lklam@augusta.k12.va.us

    Planning:

    1st Semester – 3rd Block (11:35-1:30)

    2nd Semester – 1st Block (11:35-1:30)

This course is necessary to complete the State Department’s graduation requirements for an advanced studies diploma.  It builds problem solving skills, strengthens math skills for college readiness, serves as a prerequisite for Discrete math, Pre-calculus and Calculus, and provides practice for application for many vocational skills(ie, construction, daily living skills, military application, etc.).

This is an academic course.  To be successful with Algebra II-Trig, students should have at least a A in both Geometry and Algebra I.  Students who previously took year-long math courses should expect a significant increase in the amount of time required outside of school.

    MATERIALS:

Text – Holt McDougal Algebra 2

Calculator – Casio CFX-9850GC Plus (These will be issued to each student.)

**If the student loses or damages the calculator, there will be a $60.00

    replacement fee.

Notebook – Each student needs a 3-ring binder.

Other items - #2 pencils, erasers, highlighters, and graph paper (optional).

    GRADING:

Grades will be determined by tests, quizzes, and  a homework/participation grade.  Tests will occur at the end of each chapter and will be preceded by a review activity.  Quizzes will occur once-three times per chapter.  All quizzes and tests will be announced.  Ample time will be given for completing each quiz and test.  All papers will be due at the end of the block.

    Grading Percentages:

    Tests: 50%

    Quizzes: 40%

    Homework/participation (daily grades): 10%

Homework will be based on a total of 6 points a day. If the homework is

only partially completed or no work shown for problems requiring work, then

the student will receive 3 points for that day. If the student did not attempt the assignment or does not have 50% of the assignment complete, then that assignment will be a “0”. No late HW will be accepted in the Semester Alg.2 Course unless the student is absent EXCUSED, then the hw will be turned in the day the student returns.

**Homework will be posted on my webpage on a daily basis for students and parents to access. To access my webpage, log on to the FDHS website and go to “Staff Directory". Find “Lam L.(Math)” and go to “Algebra 2 Sem. HW 1st semester 2019-2020”.

**Students and parents are encouraged to also sign up for “REMIND” for daily text messages for HW. The directions to sign up were included in the initial information packet sent home on the first day of the semester.

Extra Credit Opportunities- May occur randomly but rarely throughout the semester.  Points will be awarded in accordance with the difficulty of the assignment and performance on the assignment at the teacher’s discretion.

    STUDENT EXPECTATIONS FOR THIS COURSE:

-Each student is expected to keep an up-to-date notebook, which includes dates,

objectives, notes, class work, and homework assignments for each class period.

-Attendance is a necessity. My motto is: “I can not teach you if you are not here!”

If a student is absent, he or she is expected to come in before the next school day

to get make-up work and to check the class notebook for notes, assignments,

quizzes, etc. If a student missed a pre-scheduled quiz or test, he or she will be

expected to make it up before or after school the first day back.

-Each student will need to spend some time each evening reviewing terms,

definitions, and properties that he or she learned in class that day.

-HOMEWORK NEEDS TO BE DONE EVERY NIGHT. RARELY WILL

STUDENTS NOT HAVE SOME TYPE OF ALG. 2 HOMEWORK!

-Each student will need to come in for extra help when he or she does not

understand a topic covered in class. This will need to be done as soon as

possible so that further understanding is not hindered. I will usually be

available in my room before school from approximately 7:50-8:10 and

after school from approximately 3:10-4:00 on most days.

-If extra tutoring services are needed, please contact me or the Guidance

Dept. to obtain information about “OCAT”, a free service offered by retired

    teachers.

**NEW ADDITIONAL CLASSROOM POLICY FOR MY CLASS:

SCHOOL POLICY: Cell phones and all electronics are not allowed to be on or used during the school day except at lunch.  I am asking that all cell phones be off and kept in the student’s bookbag.  If a student is caught with a cell phone in my class, I will confiscate it and take it to the office at the end of the block to be picked up by the parents at their convenience.
