    PROGRAM OVERVIEW AND PHILOSOPHY

The Technology & Engineering Education department at Stuarts Draft Middle School offers exploratory/elective courses to students in grades 6-8. These courses are taught in accordance to the competencies and standards set by the Virginia Career and Technical Education and the Standards of Technological Literacy.  It is the philosophy of the department that all students should learn about technology and engineering and its impact on our world.  The department understands that our technological world is constantly changing and that we should provide students with the knowledge, tools, and skills to be the leaders and contributors of the future.

In addition to specific technology course content (mentioned below), students are taught and evaluated on the Workplace Readiness Skills, established by the Commonwealth of Virginia.  These skills are identified as the most desired by employers who hire high school graduates and entry-level workers.  There are a total of 21 skills, divided into the follow major topic areas:  Personal Qualities and People Skills, Professional Knowledge and Skills, and Technology Knowledge and Skills.  It is the department’s desire that all students obtain and excel in these skills so that they can obtain personal and professional success.
