I hope that the fourth grade students will become engaged in the hands-on learning environment of both science and math!

Beginning with the arrival of our "Brook Trout" in October, students will be involved in daily observation and testing of water quality issues in the tank. We have been known to raise the largest trout in Virginia!

The pictures on the website were taken during the 2010- 2012 school year.  From 2012 through the 2017 school years we raised and released more than 125 trout each school year. The trout were released into Roaring Run Creek at Springdale Water Gardens.
In January of 2014, a malfunctioning impeller that did not restart after a power outage created filtration issues that within a few hours lead to the death of all the trout. For spring of the year of 2014, our tank was the habitat for 3 minnows, 3 salamanders, 3 crayfish, 1 caddisfly larvae,1 dragonfly larva, 3 aquatic sowbugs, and a multitude of snails! We released these "critters" back into "Roaring Run" creek during our May 2014 field trip to Springdale Water Gardens.
2015- 2017 were successful trout school years. We released more than 125 fingerlings into Roaring Run at Springdale Water Gardens at an after school field trip in June.
2016-2017 looks like another successful trout raising year. In Mrs. Leonard's absence Mrs. Dolfi and the students continue to manage the trout tank.
