I am enjoying working with the Title I students in grades 1st - 5th! This is my 26th year of teaching and my eleventh year, as a reading specialist! I have also been a classroom teacher for preschool, second grade, and third grade and have a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and Education from Bridgewater College and reading specialist certification and a Master's degree in Education from JMU.
The students that I see receive 30 - 40 minutes a day of reading instruction, in addition to the instruction provided by their classroom teacher. We will be working on the "Daily 5", which consists of the literacy tasks of reading to self, reading to someone, listening to reading, word work, and writing. Focus will also be devoted to strategies with our "Reading FACE", which is an acronym for Fluency, Accuracy, Comprehension, and Extending Vocabulary.
Additionally, we are excited to pilot a new research-based reading program called RISE (Reading Interventions for Students to Excel), which focuses on 4 rotations of reading a new book, phonics and word study, rereading a book with comprehension work, and guided writing. I will also spend time learning about your child's strengths and needs as a reader in order to plan the best instructional plan for your child.
Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, concerns, or need reading suggestions for how to help your child at home. My email is firstname.lastname@example.org Thank you for all of the positive support we have received for the Title I Program! :)
