2nd BlockWorld History
Education and Experience:
I am a 1988 graduate of Fort Defiance High School and earned my BA in English and Russian from James Madison University in 1992. I worked for the Daily News Leader in display advertising sales and returned to JMU in 1995 to complete the courses necessary to become a Social Studies teacher. My student teaching placement was here at Fort Defiance High School and I finished my certification in December 1996. After moving to Fredericksburg in 1997, I took a position at Brooke Point High School in Stafford County in September 1997 and over the course of 8 years, I taught World History Civilization to 1500 AD, World History 1500 to Present, United States and Virginia History, Government and the Behind the Wheel portion of Driver’s Education. I also coached winter and spring track and completed a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership and Supervision for grades K-12 from George Mason University in 2003.
In 2004, I left Stafford County briefly to take a position with the Department of Defense as a civilian employee of the Coalition Provisional Authority in Baghdad, Iraq. I worked in the Senior Advisor’s office to the Iraqi Ministry of Education from January through May 2004. I went back to Brooke Point High School for the 2004-2005 academic year, but when my mentor teacher at Fort Defiance High School retired, I decided that I would like to be closer to my family in Augusta County and began the application process to transfer home. I was happy to accept a position at Fort Defiance High School and have thoroughly enjoyed the transition from Northern Virginia.
Currently, I am teaching Advanced Placement United States History and World History. I love to learn as much as I love to teach and enjoy taking advantage of new learning opportunities. Hopefully, by sharing my continued learning with my students it will encourage them to embrace lifelong learning.
