    PURPOSE

In 1978, the National Art Education Association (NAEA) began the National Art Honor Society (NAHS) program specifically for high school students, for the purpose of inspiring and recognizing those students who have shown an outstanding ability in art. The NAHS strives to aid members in working toward the

attainment of the highest standards in art areas, and to bring art education to the attention of the school and community. For students to achieve high standards, art programs must maintain a substantive focus by choosing art content that includes complex problem-solving and higher order thinking skills, and serious alignment of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development that results in student learning.

    MISSION STATEMENT

Students will foster excellence and a dedicated spirit to the pursuit of art; further creative abilities and talents of the Society’s members, as well as the school’s entire student art enrollment; aid members in working toward the attainment of their highest potential in an art area; bring art to the attention of the school and community; increase an awareness of art in relation to other areas of the school curriculum; and further aesthetic awareness in all aspects of the school’s total program.

    REQUIRMENTS

Membership in this chapter shall be based upon art scholarship, service, and character.

To be eligible for selection to membership in this chapter, the candidate must have been in attendance for a period equivalent to one semester in art in this school.

Candidates eligible for selection to this chapter must be high school students, and shall have a minimum art scholarship average of B. This level of achievement shall remain fixed.

Members may remain active during such time when there is no art on their class schedule.

Dues—Every student wishing to participate in NAHS must pay $10 dues ($3.00 per member shall be

forwarded to the National Art Honor Society at the NAEA Office). Students who do not pay dues will not be permitted to attend any of the conferences.  In addition, students will be expected to participate in the fundraisers—any money that is not raised through fundraisers will be the responsibility of the individual student to pay.  All school fees for conferences will be paid before any individual delegate fees are paid.

    MEETINGS

Attendance at meetings is required.  Since there is a great deal of research involved in these activities, meetings either before or after school will be required.
