Copyright Information for Teachers

Copyright is the law.  Copyright protects the creators of original works and gives them the exclusive rights to distribute their works and to receive fair compensation.  It is important for anyone who uses copyright materials - including teachers - to understand what the United States copyright law permits and what it restricts.

Augusta County Policy:
Regulation 8.520.1

Copyright Law: The Augusta County School Board adheres to the provisions of Title 17 of the United States Code. All copying of materials not specifically allowed by the copyright law, fair use guidelines, license agreements or producer's permission is expressly prohibited. Anyone willfully violating the restrictions of the copyright law assumes sole liability for any infringement. For the purpose of clarification, copyright guidelines may be found in the Librarians Media Center Handbook and shall be available in each school's library and administrative office.
