Smart Beginnings brings people together in support ofVirginia’s youngest citizens, those under the age of five. The mission is to help all children enter school healthy and prepared to succeed.
Smart Beginnings Shenandoah Valley is one of more than 20 coalitions around the Commonwealth of Virginia engaged in collaborative partnerships with childcare professionals, business leaders, schools, faith based organizations, and government officials to identify and implement long term strategies for improving school readiness for our youngest citizens, birth to age five.
Shenandoah Valley Smart Beginnings is building partnerships across the Shenandoah Valley in the cities of Harrisonburg, Staunton, Waynesboro, and the counties of Augusta, Page, Rockingham, and Shenandoah.
One part of Augusta County Schools' involvement in Smart Beginnings, nine out of thirteen classrooms are rated with the Virginia Quality Improvement System.
The Virginia Star Quality Initiative looks at the quality ofclassrooms across several levels. Itthen awards early childhood programs a star rating on a scale of one of fivestars. The star rating system beginswith one star, which indicates that the program is meeting all of the state’sbasic requirements. The star ratingsthen increase with the quality of the early childhood program, with five starsbeing the highest rating. It was createdto provide a consistent way to distinguish the level of quality in earlyeducation programs, allowing parents to make more informed choices.Visit the Smart Beginnings Website
