Scholarship Information

Suntrust Off To College Scholarships

  • $1000 Scholarship for students.
  • Free to enter and eligibility NOT based on GPA or financial need.
  • Thirty chances to win with one winner chosen every two weeks from October to May.
  • Enter online at offtocollege.info beginning September 11, 2017.

The first drawing will be held on October 31, 2017 and the “Scholarship Sweepstakes” will continue with a drawing every two weeks from October thru May.  A scholarship check will be payable to the winner’s college of attendance.  Only one entry per person for each drawing; however, students can register after each completed drawing for the next scheduled drawing. Application Deadline:  Prior to last drawing held on May 15, 2018.

  

Elks Legacy Scholarship Program

The Legacy Scholarship competition is open to any high school senior that will be attending college who are children or grandchildren of dues-paying Elks.  Applicants compete separately against other children and grandchildren from the state of their sponsoring Elk Lodge.  Great-grandchildren are not eligible. Applicants are judged on the core values of the Elks National Foundation:  Knowledge, Charity, Community Service and Integrity.  Applicants must apply online at www.elks.org/enf/scholars by February 2, 2018.

 American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Contest

The American Legion is offering the American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship for 2017-2018.  To be eligible, students must be under the age of 20 and enrolled in a high school and be willing to participate in department debate at the local American Legion Post.    

Award:  Scholarships range from $600 - $18,000 (if compete in national level competition)

Application Deadline:  Students must complete their debate at the local American Legion Post by January 1, 2018.  Applications are available online at www.legion.org or www.legion.org/oratorical.

 The Society of the Cincinnati History Essay Contest/Scholarship

The Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Virginia announces an essay contest for any senior who will attend any four-year college or university in the Commonwealth of Virginia beginning in the Fall of 2018.  The Society will award four scholarships, of $3,000 each, to those eligible contestants whose essays are judged to be the most outstanding.  This year’s essay topic will be The Westmoreland Resolutions.  Further essay instructions and contest rules are available in the Guidance Office. Application form and two copies of your essay must be postmarked by Friday, March 16, 2018.

Better Business Bureau Student of Integrity Scholarship

The BBB of Western Virginia Student of Integrity Scholarship Program recognizes high school seniors who personify high ethics demonstrated through leadership, community service, overall personal integrity and academic history.  Students will be selected by an independent panel of judges to receive a college scholarship of $1,000.  Scholarship recipients will be recognized at the BBB Student of Integrity Dinner in Roanoke in the spring of 2018.  Winners MUST be available to attend the dinner.  Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA to apply.   Applications are available  online at www.BBBStudentOfIntegrity.org.  All entries should include a completed scholarship application, scholarship essay, letter of recommendation, transcript, completed Activity Form and a paragraph, typed, describing post-secondary plans and goals.   All entries must be completed and postmarked to the BBB no later than January 31, 2018

 Virginia Golf Foundation Scholarship

The Virginia Golf Foundation was created by the Virginia State Golf Association for the purpose of funding college scholarships to worthy Virginia high school students who have an interest in golf and will attend college within the Commonwealth.  The criteria for a scholarship will be based on academic achievement, an interest in golf (skill level not important), character and financial need.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office or online @ scholarships.VSGA.org  and must be submitted to the VSGA by Wednesday, February 21, 2018

 Virginia Daughters of the American Revolution(DAR) Scholarships

The Virginia state DAR (VADAR) is offering high school seniors several opportunities for scholarships who plan to continue their education at Virginia colleges and universities.  VADAR scholarships include a Nursing Scholarship & another Virginia DAR Scholarship each worth up to $2,500.  All forms and instructions are available at www.vadar.org.  Scholarship applications must be received by the Virginia DAR Scholarship State Chairman office by January 12, 2018.

 Burger King Scholars Program

Need help paying for college?  The Burger King Scholars Program can help!  All high school seniors, Burger King employees, their dependent children and spouses are eligible to receive up to $50,000 in scholarship awards for the 2017-18 school year!  High school seniors must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 to be eligible.  Apply online at www.burgerkingscholars@scholarshipamerica.org.  Application deadline is December 15, 2017.  

NFIB Young Entrepreneur Award

Are you a young entrepreneur?  Graduating high school seniors who operate their own small business are eligible to receive a 2017 NFIB Young Entrepreneur Award from the NFIB Foundation.  100 scholarships will be awarded to Young Entrepreneurs, ranging from $2,000 - $25,000.  The selection criteria includes academics, extracurricular activities, leadership and character and an officially established business is a requirement.  Apply online at www.NFIB.com/YEA between Oct. 1 and Dec.15, 2017. 

 Virginia Tech Pamplin Leadership Award

The Pamplin Leader is a one-year merit-based $5,000 tuition scholarship. The scholarship will be presented to up to 40 qualified students chosen from among the Commonwealth of Virginia’s public high schools who are planning to apply to Virginia Tech, are admitted, and accepts the offer of admission.  The scholarship is open to students applying to all majors.  Applicants must have a 3.8 GPA, AND must be ranked in the top ten percent of his/her class, and be willing to join University Honors should they be offered and accept this award.   Scholarship application materials and more information on the Pamplin Leadership Award can be found atwww.univhonors.vt.edu/html/scholarships_pamplin.html.  To be considered, applications must be submitted to Mrs. Reed in Guidance by December 15, 2017.  All applications are then collected, certified in the Guidance Office, and one candidate will be submitted to the VT Scholarship Program.  

 The Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge

The Community Foundation administers nearly 30 scholarships for graduating seniors pursuing higher education.  Each scholarship has its own purpose, selection and eligibility criteria.  BGHS seniors are eligible to apply for at least 4 of these scholarships:  Community Scholarship for Excellence, Kenneth L. Jones Memorial Scholarship, Martin Lightsey Scholarship for Technical Education, and Hargrove Cook Scholarship.  Only one application needs to be completed, however, be sure to check all scholarships that you want to be considered for.  Applications are available at www.communityfoundationcbr.org and must be received by the Community Foundation by March 5, 2018.

Dupont Community Credit Union Scholarship

For the 23rd year, Dupont Community Credit Union is offering a scholarship to each public school in the membership area.  One graduating senior from Buffalo Gap High School will receive a $1,000 academic scholarship to further their education.  The scholarship must be used to attend at least a two-year accredited educational institution.  Applicants must apply online at www.mydccu.com. The deadline for the application and essay to be received by DCCU is March 5, 2018.
