S. Gordon Stewart served the Augusta County Public Schools for more than 50 years in many capacities including the Director of Instruction, Assistant Superintendent, and Superintendent. This professional educator retired in 1980, yet his work in the community continued on for many years. Mr. Stewart was a member of the United Way Board of Directors since 1946. He also was active in the Stonewall Jackson Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Stewart was an effective, compassionate leader who possessed a quiet humor. When Augusta County’s second middle school opened in 1980, the school was named for Mr. S. Gordon Stewart - educator, leader, and friend.
