What is a BCBA?

A Board Certified Behavior Analysist (BCBA) is a professional with a graduate-level certification in applied behavioral analysis, who has participated in a minimum of 1500 field work hours (usually over a period of two years), participated in clinical supervision from an experienced BCBA, and passed a national board certification exam through the Behavior Certification Analysis Board. Their job includes focusing on changing socially significant behaviors, and focuses on principles that explain how learning takes place and how behavior changes over time. Through principles like the use of positive reinforcement, communication and social skills training, and shaping more appropriate replacement behaviors, our BCBAs are able to encourage more functional communicative behavior and reduce behaviors that may interfere in learning. The Shenandoah Valley Regional Program currently has sixteen BCBAs working in the region. SVRP has an ongoing partnership with James Madison University to provide internship within the school divisions with graduate level students working towards their behavior analyst certification.
